Aspen partners with Vail to field Fall Midget team

Aspen Junior Hockey partnered with Vail to compete in the fall Colorado Prep Hockey League, offered to all Midget age players (ages 15-18).

Although registration for the formal roster is closed, all midget players not formally registered are encouraged to participate in all practices at Lewis Arena ($20 per practice please).

The following are important facts about the Aspen Junior Hockey CPHL season to please consider:

  • The CPHL replaces Midget A hockey in Colorado
  • This is a completely separate season from AJH winter hockey programming (including fees).
  • Players that choose not to participate this fall will not be penalized in any way during the High School selection process. Once the fall season is over, a new season of hockey begins.
  • We are in no way attempting to compete with fall sports. AJH welcomes and encourages multiple sport participants. We understand and embrace that many our hockey players are athletes first.
  • The goal of our program is to provide players choosing to specialize in hockey the opportunity to continue their development in the fall. Based on research backing the long-term athletic development model, the proper time for a player to consider specializing their training is 15-16 years old (depending on the physical, motor skills, cognitive, social and emotional skills needed to take this step).
  • The AJH Director and Coaches will not pressure any player to choose hockey over another sport.  AJH highly discourages peer pressure to choose hockey over another fall sport as well.  AJH believes that at this age, players should develop the ability to choose their own commitments.

The following are important facts about Aspen Junior Hockey in the CPHL:

  • All CPHL teams will play a 10-12 game "regular season" schedule starting September 1. A scheduling meeting is set for August 2; the AJH Director plans to attend and provide input.
  • The season concludes on November 5; playoffs run between November 6 and 10. The top two teams will be representing Colorado at HS nationals consisting of one 'pure' team & one 'combined' team.
  • Teams will play USA Hockey Midget rules (not CHSAA/Federation) with three 15-minute stop time games with an ice make between the second and third periods.

The following are the details about the season:

  • Starting August 25 and running through November 5, Aspen participants receive 2 nights of advanced instruction (Mondays and Wednesdays) each week at Lewis Arena.  Players always have the option of attending additional practices on non-conflicting nights in Vail/Eagle.
  • For games, Aspen players will combine with Vail players in order to field a competitive roster. Based on our preliminary numbers, we are anticipating a 15-player roster. A neutral jersey and socks are provided.
  • Home games will be split between Aspen and Vail/Eagle. Since we are registered as a combined team, if we finish the playoffs above other combined teams, the team (same fall roster) will attend the USA Hockey High School National Tournament in late March.
  • Ryan Kiernan is the head coach; Pete Harriman and Dru Lucchesi will serve as assistants, and AJH Director Shaun Hathaway will actively support player development both on and off the ice. Last season Ryan and Pete guided the Aspen Leafs Bantam A team to a state championship; Dru takes over as the new Aspen High School Head Coach in 2014-15.
  • The cost for the fall season is $750. This includes 26 hours of ice, referees, league fees, jerseys and socks, operating expenses, and a small stipend for coaches.
  • Those not formally registered on the roster are encouraged to attend all practices ($20 per practice please).
