League Play Begins for Aspen Junior Hockey

Aspen Leafs 20U Junior:

On Friday night on home ice at the Garden, the Aspen Leafs were unable to dig themselves out of an early 3-0 first period hole, and suffered their second loss of the season 4-3.  Andrew Lee, Charlie Van Allen and Ivan Bondarenko each scored for the Leafs.  In game two of the weekend series Saturday night, with a short bench Aspen responded with a solid performance gaining their 10th win of the season in a 5-1 victory.  Trent Luby scored a hat trick, scoring all three goals on the power-play. Bondarenko finished the game with one goal and four assists.  Goaltender Anders Brucker continued to turn heads with his impressive play stopping 79 shots in the weekend split, and earning his league leading 7th victory of the young season.

14U Bantam A:

The Aspen Bantam A team played a three game series in Denver Saturday and Sunday against the Cherry Creek Bruins, marking the official start of regular season CDYHL play.  The defending league champions and recently crowned Fall Faceoff victors kept their undefeated record in tact with three straight wins over the Bruins 3-2, 3-1, and 3-0.  Leading the team in scoring, Mathew Rigney finished the weekend with three goals, Jack Pevny netted three, and Ethan Hunt recorded two (goals).  Goaltender Gage Redman made 57 total saves, notching his first regular season shutout Sunday morning.

14U AA Girls:

The Aspen Lady Leafs hosted the first of four CAHA Tier-2 league series weekends against the other three 14U “AA” teams in the state: the Colorado Select, Rocky Mountain Lady Roughriders, and the Colorado Springs Lady Tigers. Aspen started the season strong going undefeated in the first event at Lewis Arena.  Juna Rettig, Sasha Brucker and Katie Yocum led in scoring, each tallying two goals in the three games.  Goaltender Lexi Ferlisi was solid between the pipes, stopping 49 total shots.  The three wins to start the season vaults Aspen into first place with six points.  The top team after the four regular season events advances to the Rocky Mountain District finals in March.

14U A Girls:

After capturing the Western Regional Silver Stick Championship last weekend, Aspen was forced to quickly turn the page and take the long journey to New Mexico for a pair of opening MSGHL regular season games.  The long travel weekend coupled with a limited practice schedule seemed to catch up to the Lady Leafs.  On Saturday, Aspen suffered a disappointing 5-0 loss after out-shooting the Mustangs 36-20.  On Sunday morning, Laney Martens and Amanda Simeone both scored for the Leafs, but the New Mexico offense was able to rattle off another five goals in the game, skating to a 5-2 victory and gaining the series sweep. Leafs goaltender Sammie Jaworski made 30 saves in both games.

12U  Peewee A:

The Aspen Leafs Peewee A team started league action over Halloween Weekend in Breckenridge for three games against the Summit Lightning.  The Leafs simply dominated the Lightning, racking up 25 goals in the series sweep (5-0, 10-2, 10-1).  George Morrison led the team in scoring with 10 points (2 goals, 8 assists).  Dane Whiston, Wilder Jacober and Brooks Bond each finished the weekend with seven points.  Goaltender Zach Small was relatively untested, finishing with 36 saves in the three wins.
