Summaries for Home and Away Games- Girls and Boys

19U Girls: Aspen was in Denver visiting the Colorado Select for a pair of MSGHL games over the weekend. In two physical games marred by penalties, Aspen dominated the home team and picked up a pair of wins 10-2 and 8-0. Goaltender Sonya Benson collected her fifth shutout in league play.  With the weekend sweep and four points earned, the Leafs moved to 8-1-3, only one point away from second place Summit. While in Denver, the Leafs took time to visit teammate Mackenzie Langley (#15) and watch AJH alum Daniel Doremus lead his DU Pioneers against Minnesota Duluth at Magness Arena.

High School: Aspen won their third straight game 7-0 over Mullen to move their conference record to an even 4-4 mark. In a dominating performance, the Skiers outshot the visiting Mustangs by a lop-sided 52-13 margin. After a scoreless first period, a balanced Aspen offense came alive with second and third period goals by seven different skaters. Freshman goaltender Anders Brucker recorded his first career shutout and win.

Midgets: It took 35 seconds for the Leafs to win the first of two games against Craig in CPHL action at Lewis Arena. With a balanced attack that included a hat-trick by Zac Mencimer, Aspen dismantled Craig in a 10-0 opening win.  Goaltender Jacob Wedhorn recorded his first shutout and second win of the season.  In game two Henry Ferguson was sandwiched behind the net by two Craig players battling with the puck. He displayed impressive toughness after the hit, which resulted in a badly broken wrist. Aspen won the game 5-1.

14UAA Girls: Aspen hosted the only other 14U AA team in the state the Lady Rough Riders from Denver. With the state playoffs only three weeks away that features a best of three series against the LRR (winner advances to Regional championship in Dallas), the home series this weekend was an opportunity to prepare. In game 1, Aspen outshot their opponents 26-17, but suffered a disappointing 6-1 loss as the team was unable to capitalize on shots or control their defensive zone. In game 2, the Leafs dominated much of the play, but penalty trouble costs them in a head-scratiching 5-1 loss. Aspen travels to Summit on Saturday for a "home" game against Colorado Springs.

14U A Girls: The Aspen Girls visited the Telluride Lizard Heads for a pair of important MSGHL games and came away with four important points. Aspen outshot Telluride 22-16 and cruised to a 5-1 victory in game one of the two game series. In game two at the Telluride Town Park Pavillion, Aspen rattled off 33 shots in a hard fought 4-2 win. Goaltender Lexi Ferlisi recorded 27 saves in the win. With three league games remaining, Aspen can clinch a playoff berth win a sweep over fourth place Summit this upcoming weekend in Breckenridge.

Bantam A: The Aspen Leafs travelled to Glenwood Springs to complete the third and final game of the CDYHL regular season series. Aspen came into the game ready to avenge a previous loss and tie on home ice against their down valley rivals. In a fast paced and physical game, the Leafs won the special teams battle by controlling their emotions and letting Glenwood spend time in the penalty box. Because of their discipline and some key saves by goaltender Emerson Jacobson, the team returned to Aspen victorious with a 2-1 win. With the victory, Aspen takes sole possession of third place behind Steamboat Springs and Cherry Creek.

Bantam B: Currently sitting in the #2 spot heading towards the playoffs, the Leafs earned a tough four points in three CDYHL games against playoff ineligible Craig. Aspen displayed tremendous class, emotional control, and determination against an undisciplined opponent that racked up a staggering 112 penalty minutes in only 42 minutes of competition. The Leafs started the weekend flying around the Cougars with 7-2 win.  The next day Craig recorded 62 minutes in penalties on 15 infractions, while a three-goal burst in the second period was enough for a 3-1 Aspen win. In the final game, the Leafs held a 3-2 lead with only two minutes to go; however, Craig's over-aggressive physical play finally took its toll and Cougars capitalized with three late third period goals to hand Aspen a stunning 4-3 loss.

12U A Girls: The Aspen Girls made a big statement against the over-matched Colorado Select, who currently sits in first place with a perfect 12-0. In 12 games, the Select has outscored its opponents 88-7. In game one, Aspen started timid, giving up 7 goals in the first period. In the second period they regrouped, and the entire weekend changed.  After suffering the 9-1 series opening loss, in game two Aspen came alive and went toe to toe with its Denver based rival. Down by three goals after the first period, this time Aspen rallied. In the final period, the Leafs held the Select to zero shots, and the team pulled within a goal, netting two late in the game before time ran out. With the playoffs just weeks away, the Aspen Leafs should be overflowing with confidence and the Colorado Select should be worried.

Peewee A: With five CDYHL games left, the undefeated Leafs took care of business at home with a three-game sweep of rival Vail by a combined score of 13-1. In game one, Aspen scored two goals early in the third to secure a 4-1 victory. Jack Pevny registered a hat-trick in a 5-0 game-two win. In game three, goaltender Larkin Dolan recorded his 12th shutout this season (his fifth in league play), and the Leafs cruised to a 4-0 victory. With the three points, the Leafs move into sole possession of first place with an 11-0-2 CDHYL record (24 points).

Peewee B: The Leafs climbed back into playoff contention over the weekend gaining seven points in four league games against Craig and Steamboat Springs. In the first two games at Loudly Simpson Arena in Craig, Aspen dominated the play collecting two solid wins 3-0 and 8-0.  Aspen goaltender Zac Small was perfect in net posting his second and third shutouts this season. The following day Aspen played two hard fought games against rival Steamboat. In game one, the Leafs scored the final two goals in the third period to salvage a 6-6 tie. In the final game of the long weekend series, Aspen’s hard work paid off with an important 5-4 victory.

Squirt B: It was the battle between the CDYHL #1 and #2 over the weekend at Lewis Arena with the Vail Mountaineers in town. Fittingly at the end of the weekend, Aspen and Vail stood together tied for first in CDYHL action with an identical 11-4 record. In game one of three, down by a goal late, the Leafs hit the post with seconds left suffering a tough 4-3 loss. In game two, Aspen turned the tides and held on for a hard fought 4-3 win. On Sunday morning, the shots were even and the game seemed tight, but Vail simply found the back of the net, handing Aspen a stinging 5-1 defeat and setting up the stage for inevitable and exciting playoff showdown.

Squirt C: The Leafs continued to learn, improve and grow as a team on the road together with a pair of CDYHL games in Craig.  In game one, the team collected their third league win of the season with an exciting 3-1 victory.  Goaltender Jeremiah Swenson was spectacular in net stopping 27 Cougar shots. In the second game, the Leafs displayed some fatigue, and the older (playoff ineligible) Craig ran up the score in a lop-sided contest. Aspen looks to regroup this week and turn its sites on the remaining month of CDHYL league play.
