3 of 6 AJH Teams in the Finals win Championships

Six Aspen Junior Hockey teams from 18U-Midgets to 10U-Squirts finished fourth or higher in their respective leagues to qualify for the post-season playoffs.  Participating in different venues throughout the state, all six teams advanced to championship games, marking a historic weekend for AJH.  After the dust settled Sunday, the Leafs had captured three league titles, and qualified five teams for the Federation Cup (formally the Avs Cup).  This final-four tournament in Denver (March 13-15) features the top two CDYHL teams at each division against the top two teams from the front-range based youth league (CCYHL). Aspen Junior Hockey leads all associations in the state with the highest number of teams represented at this final season-ending event.  For Director Shaun Hathaway, the results punctuated another successful hockey season for AJH players and coaches.  “I’m extremely proud of all our teams.  Making it to the post-season in a league that only takes the top four teams at each division is a great accomplishment in itself.  To have the incredible success we experienced during the playoffs is simply a reflection of the hard work and dedication displayed by our players and coaches."

Hosting the 14U-Bantam playoffs at Lewis Arena, Aspen’s Bantam A and B teams both needed all five games to win the double elimination tournament.  The Bantam A team started the weekend with a disappointing 8-3 loss to Steamboat, however, they quickly regrouped with victories over Glenwood (7-2), and Cherry Creek (5-4) to advance to the final round.  Needing two wins to celebrate a championship, the Leafs came together as a unit, and defeated Steamboat 5-3, and 5-4.  Goaltender Emerson Jacobson was solid in net with 88 saves in four games, and Reece Cohan led all teams in scoring with 13 points (7 goals, 6 assists).  In the Bantam B division, Aspen opened play with a 6-3 victory over West Elk, but stumbled in game two suffering a 3-1 loss to the Cherry Creek Bruins.  Needing a win in game three to keep their playoff run alive, the Leafs once again defeated West Elk 2-1 to advance.  In a rematch against top-seed Cherry Creek, the Leafs eked out a 3-2 overtime victory to force a final game.  The team raised the championship banner after defeating the Bruins 4-2. Cooper Johnson and Matthew Rigney led the team in scoring with 4 points each, and goaltender Logan Soderberg finished strong recording 55 total saves.

In Eagle, the 12U Peewee A team won three straight games to claim the championship title.  Aspen began the weekend by defeating the Summit Lightning 5-4 in overtime.  In game two, the offense kept up the pressure and the team skated to a 5-4 win over the Glenwood Grizzlies.  In their final game, the Leafs celebrated a championship after handing the Grizzlies their second straight loss 2-1. Brooks Bond led the team in scoring with six points (5 goals, 1 assist) and goaltender Larkin Dolan finished with 44 saves. Also in Eagle the Leafs Peewee B team knocked off top-seed Vail 3-2 and Grand Junction 5-3 to advance to the championship round.  In their third game, Aspen fell to second-seed Glenwood 5-3 setting up a winner take all finale against the Grizzlies. Although Aspen came from behind to tie the game with 40 seconds left to play, a bad bounce in quadruple overtime ended the Leafs run.  Eli Hunt and Keaton Miller each recorded 4 points to lead their team in scoring, and goaltender Zach Small was spectacular in net registering 118 saves.

After travelling to Steamboat for the 10U Squirt playoffs, the Leafs Squirt B team quickly advanced to the championship round and clinched a Federation Cup berth with a 5-2 win over Steamboat and a 4-3 win over top seed Vail.  On Sunday however, Vail stormed back with two solid performances and sent Aspen home with a runner-up banner.  Goaltender Zane Haber made 38 saves in four games, and forwards Nick Pevny and Brady Conrardy finished with a team-high five points.

The Leafs 18U Midget team was in Breckenridge participating in the inaugural Colorado Prep Hockey League Tier-2 single elimination final four playoffs event.  Aspen advanced to the finals after a dominating 9-3 performance against West Elk. In a highly entertaining championship game against Steamboat, even though the Leafs outshot the Sailors 24-20, they were unable to gain the upper hand on the scoreboard, and concluded the season with a second place finish. Connor O’Brien led all teams in scoring with 7 points (5 goals, 2 assists), and goaltender Jacob Wedhorn completed a fantastic first year in a Leafs jersey with 36 playoff saves
