Aspen Leafs: Developing Athletes and Character Since 1972 (501c3 non-profit organization)

Letter from AJH Board/ 2020-21 Program Survey

Aspen Junior Hockey Families -

We want to thank you once again for your support in our community, specifically with our program. We know the year has had plenty of ups and downs, but we find joy in knowing your child participated in our program. We celebrate that AJH was able to give our youth a much-needed physical and mental outlet. AJH continues to pride itself on learning and growing together; we want to improve each season, learn from our mistakes, and continue to advance on our successes.

AJH, like so many other programs operating during a pandemic, had to adapt in so many ways. It is a true testament to you as parents and, more so, for your athletes to keep a positive outlook. Like a game, things can change, a goal can be scored, a penalty was taken, and a save can shift the momentum. We learn to control the controllable, push forward to achieve a common goal for the greater good of our family, community, and our team.

Aspen Junior Hockey wants to acknowledge you as parents for the sacrifice, dedication, and time you make for your athletes. It is remarkable and never goes unnoticed. We hope each family stays safe and healthy, and we can’t wait to see you all back at the ice rink come fall.

We kindly ask for a few minutes of your time to complete our short survey so we can keep building for the future. Please click the link here to do so.

Sincerely,

Sheldon Wolitski

President of Aspen Junior Hockey

AJH Spring Camp - April 19th - May 21st

Aspen Junior Hockey Organization will be hosting their 1st Annual AJH Spring Camp Monday, April 19 th - Friday, May 21st under executive director Harlan Pratt. Spring camp focuses on improving each player's skill set, much like our AJH summer skills and director skates this year. The spring camp will help players get ready for tryouts if they choose to look for Tier l/ll options while allowing players to continue to hone their skills over a consistent time frame as hockey is becoming faster and more skilled every year. The camp will include one high tempo flow practice and one skill session per week. The high tempo flow practice will focus on game situations, which will help players make quicker and more decisive decisions in games. Skill sessions will improve each player's skating, edge work, shooting drills, passing, puck skills, and protection. The off-ice sessions will be age-specific to enhance players' agility, speed, and power; we plan to include another multi-functioning sport to help their athleticism grow. Just like our AJH summer skills camp, this will allow players to retain more information as the sessions are spread out over five weeks vs. traditional weekend camps or week-long camps. We believe players will improve more from consistent training, allowing them to progress physically and mentally each week. Players will be able to rest and recover between sessions, which will enable the players to push themselves out of their comfort zone and maximize their practices.

Hockey DNA runs deep in Aspen's Doremus family

The hockey goal that has stood watch over the Doremus family driveway in Aspen for the past 20 years has pretty much seen it all. It has been subjected to innumerable hours of being pelted by pucks, courtesy of hundreds of shots per day and countless games of driveway hockey by five ultra-competitive brothers and a host of their associates. The goal declined to comment for this story, but the rest of the Doremus family fondly recalled their Aspen upbringing and hockey’s growing role in Colorado’s high country.

CO Hockey League Return to Play Update 1-19-21

January 19th, 2021

For Immediate Release,

Hockey Families of the –

CGHL, WGHL, CCYHL, CRHL & WCHL

With the announcement that the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) has

given USA Hockey and CAHA members the “green light” to resume hockey along many other indoor

sports. As the leagues and state governing body that so many of our hockey players are members of,

we’d like to thank you for your patience, understanding and flexibility during this past year. Going

forward, we expect challenges will remain as we work back to hockey as we were used to prior to March

2020.

The state and league leaders have agreed to the following:

• All of our members will stay current with each rinks protocols which will always be current and

posted here. Remember, these protocols may change so we recommend you view them

regularly and immediately prior to going to a facility other than your “home” rink

• Our members should stay current on ALL federal, state and local health policies and guidelines.

Intentional and flagrant violations by any members will not be tolerated and may result in

sanctions

• As we resume play our goal is to provide the best experience possible for all players, coaches

and hockey families

• Player and team density, competitive levels and geography of hockey teams raise challenges

that may not be present in other sports with respect to finding competitive parity. If you have

questions regarding competition with parity, please contact your association leaders, league

leaders and CAHA

The health and safety of our members are first and foremost and as organizations, we understand that

this requires personal thought, consideration for all your family members and perhaps very difficult

decisions. So even though we are back “open for business” the choice to participate is yours and

regardless of your decision, will be respected by all of us.

AJH Update!

We hope to have approval from our County to resume play for all our athletes.

Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment OK's CAHA Hockey return to play immediately

CAHA has been working with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) over the past several weeks.  We are very pleased to announce that CAHA has affirmed and signed off on new CDPHE guidelines that will permit all CAHA sanctioned activities to resume immediately including full practices and competition.

All CAHA members are expected to continue comply with all health guidelines from the CDC, CDPHE, CAHA and local health departments.

If you have questions regarding resumption in play, please contact your local Hockey Director for further guidance.

AJH Donations!

WE DID IT!! AJH has met the fundraising goal of 25K to get the 25K anonymous match! With this, we surpassed 50K!!! We are so thankful for our hockey community. The generous donations keep coming in, and we will continue to raise valuable funds for Aspen Junior Hockey. The AJH Board has pledged another 25K to our fundraising efforts!!! We know that together we can reach our new goal of 100K.

This year has been so difficult on so many, in particular our children. Hockey has offered a mental and physical outlet as well as some consistency in their lives. AJH has done a stellar job of following all the Covid-19 protocols, adapting to all scenarios while keeping our athletes on the ice. Parents, you have continued to support AJH and the guidelines set forth, and it has been commendable that you have kept your children healthy, rested, geared up, and always ready for practices (and games when possible). Our coaches have continued to mentor and develop our athletes while keeping our athletes working hard and having fun! AMAZING!

We are genuinely a hockey family. Thank you for your continued support of Aspen Junior Hockey! The future of our children is very BRIGHT!

Thank you

Harlan and the AJH Board of Directors

Happy Thanksgiving Update

Aspen Junior Hockey Families-

We hope everyone is doing well and staying safe; we’re providing a small update as most are already aware of our facility closures. We hope that we’ll see an opportunity to get back on the ice once we get through this holiday week. AJH was able to get on the ice at the beginning of September, so we’re still in an excellent position to reach our goal of practice hours we set to obtain. We’re staying optimistic that we can be back into our regular ice schedule in December, and our programming will look at options of extending into early March to make sure we reach that goal.

In the meantime, please have your athlete check out our Instagram page (Instagram) as we are posting workouts and challenges to keep our athletes engaged. Following this week that we have away from the ice, we’ll plan on continuing our zoom game films next Monday, the 30th.

AJH hopes everyone continues to follow guidelines set forth by our City and County so we may all see some light at the end of the tunnel. We wish everyone a great Thanksgiving Holiday and look forward to seeing you all soon.

Stay Safe, and I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving!

Aspen Junior Hockey,

Harlan

Aspen Leafs Update 11-13-20

Aspen Junior Hockey Families-

I hope you're keeping safe and doing well. AJH wanted to provide an update to you all as we see the shift in COVID-19 cases. With the surge hitting our community, the City of Aspen regrettably informed us that the Aspen Recreation Center would be closing for two weeks starting at 6 AM Wednesday, November 18th.  Unfortunately for our youth, it'll be disappointing, but we hope it is short-lived. With some optimism, AJH expects our community can bounce back during this time, and we'll soon have the opportunity to be back in the rink before we know it. Aspen Junior Hockey appreciates each member's support and for entrusting your athletes with our program in their development. At the same time, we'll continue to do our best to keep them as safe as possible in these times.

We continue to talk with the City and their staff, and we'll keep our fingers crossed this shift goes back into our favor soon. AJH hopes our programs can return to our planned schedule Wednesday, December 2nd. We’ll continue to inform our members as soon as we hear more.

We wish everyone a safe and healthy Thanksgiving holiday.

Sincerely,

Harlan
